Honouring the Legacy of John Petrak
John and his family became involved with BMHA in the late 1980s when his son, Jonathan, joined as a goaltender. What began as supporting his son’s hockey journey quickly grew into decades of service that shaped the experiences of generations of young athletes. In 1998, John took on the role of coordinating BMHA’s goaltender equipment loan program, a responsibility he faithfully carried for more than twenty years.
For over two decades, John could often be found in his “office” at the far end of the Burnaby Lake Arena dressing room tunnel – quietly repairing, organizing, and ensuring that our young goaltenders had the gear they needed to step on the ice. His efforts were rarely in the spotlight, but they were essential to keeping our program running smoothly. John always found ways to repair equipment cost-effectively, stretch membership dollars, and make sure every goalie was supported.
Outside the rink, John was a respected secondary school mathematics and science teacher, bringing the same dedication and patience to his students that he shared with BMHA. He continued teaching well beyond retirement age, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to mentoring youth.
John only stepped away from his BMHA volunteer role as Goalie Equipment Manager in 2022 when his wife, Norma-Jeanne, became ill. Earlier this year, Norma passed away, and now we mourn John’s loss alongside hers. John will be remembered as a BMHA hero – a steady, kind, and reliable presence who gave so much without ever asking for recognition in return. His legacy will live on through the countless young athletes who benefited from his work and through the values of community, service, and generosity he demonstrated so fully.
On behalf of the entire BMHA community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to John’s son Jonathan, daughter Lisa-Marie and the Petrak family.
John, thank you for everything. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
