The City of Burnaby is advising residents and visitors of upcoming traffic impacts on Kensington Avenue as part of the Burnaby Lake Recreation Complex construction.

LOCATION:  Single lane closures on Kensington Avenue, between Sprott Street and Joe Sakic Way

TIMELINE:  Week of December 8, 2025 through early February 2026

PURPOSE:  Relocation of a watermain and associated construction activities for the Burnaby Lake Recreation Complex

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • The southbound bus stop at Joe Sakic Way will be moved slightly north but remain in service
  • Detours will be in place via Sprott Street and Joe Sakic Way
  • Pedestrian access between Christine Sinclair Community Centre and Bill Copeland Sports Centre will remain open
  • Public parking at the complex will stay accessible
  • Traffic delays are expected — please allow extra travel time

 

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The new Burnaby Lake Recreation Complex is being built next to the Bill Copeland Sports Centre. It will replace the aging CG Brown Memorial Pool and Burnaby Lake Ice Rink with:

  • A 10‑lane, 50‑metre pool
  • A 6‑lane, 25‑metre pool
  • An NHL‑sized rink
  • Improved connectivity and parking
